Wishlist: In Pieces by Joey Contreras

Wishlist: In Pieces by Joey Contreras

Living down under means we don’t get quite the same choice of musicals.

So I’m starting a Wishlist of shows I hope will land in Australia one day. It’s based purely on the soundtrack and bits and pieces online. First up is In Pieces.

🎶 “Something Here May Want To Bloom” 🎶

Like many musicals, I found In Pieces via one song which appeared in an Apple Music Playlist. That song was “Bloom” and it remains my favourite of the whole show. There is something about a good duet, combined with the modern-pop-but-still-a-musical feel and what sounds like possibly a Cajon that means you can’t go wrong 🤩.

Why It Sounds So Good

In Pieces has a wide range of songs but they fit together. I love that in good musicals. “Caffeinated” seems more lighthearted and fun, and then there is a ballad like “Love Me, Love Me Not” and plenty in between. The band consists of 6 musos (Piano, Bass, Guitar, Drums, Cello, Violin) and I especially enjoy how the piano features.

Come to Australia

The University of Adelaide actually put this on a few years ago.

I get the feeling it’s a bit of a Dear Evan Hansen style show. i.e a smaller cast, a modern setting, young composer, a more modern band as opposed to an orchestra. Hopefully this might make it attractive for smaller professional, or even high quality amateur theatres. It’s a single act, 80 minute show so very do-able.

Enjoy!

It is amazing how many quality scores there are out there and In Pieces belongs in that category and deserves to enjoy many future runs. For now, enjoy the sound track next time you’re on your commute and resist the urge to keep tracks 4 and 5 on repeat and make sure you get to the gems in the second half of the album too. And if you see it is coming to a theatre let me know!
